When I started out at university I didn’t really think there was much else I could do except write poetry. I don’t remember most of first year to be honest, I think I slept for most of it. Towards the end of it though I made a couple of photographer friends who started taking pictures of me, and through that, I developed an interest in photography.

I didn’t think I’d be able to make anything because the whole thing just seemed overwhelmingly complex and expensive but I went for it anyway and ended up obsessed. My first camera was a Minolta X-700 and I started taking pictures, and within 6 months I had six cameras and an empty bank account.

I guess like my poetry, I usually explore people within my photography. People are still the most interesting thing I can work with in any sort of art I do, and I consistently marry the two art forms in my work.

Photography's one of my greatest joys now.
